ADVANCED EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAL
Course Description
The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) Course is a comprehensive program consisting of both classroom (didactic), skills lab, clinical (hospital observation) and field (ambulance observation) components. This course will provide the student with instruction in the roles and responsibilities of the EMS provider; well-being including injury prevention and infectious disease; an overview of human systems; pharmacology; venous access; airway management; training for management of medical and trauma emergencies; special considerations of the obstetric, neonatal, pediatric, and geriatric patients; and a focus on assessment-based management.
This course will also provide the student the opportunity to apply past and current cognitive knowledge and psychomotor skills in a supervised clinical or field setting. Students who successfully complete this course are eligible to take the National Registry of EMTs psychomotor and cognitive exams which lead to certification at the National Registry of EMTs.and licensure in the State ofLouisiana.
Course Objectives
At the completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Describe the roles of EMS in the health care system.
2. Demonstrate the professional attributes expected of AEMTs.
3. Perform the roles and responsibilities of an AEMT with regard to personal safety and wellness, as well as the safety of others.
4. Perform the duties of an AEMT with regard for medical-legal and ethical issues, including functioning under medical direction and within the scope of practice.
5. Apply principles of anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, life span development, and therapeutic communications to the assessment and management of patients.
6. Identify the need for and perform immediately lifesaving interventions to manage a patient’s airway, breathing, and circulation.
7. Assess and manage patients of all ages with a variety of complaints, medical conditions, and traumatic injuries.
8. Apply principles of emergency medical services operations, including considerations in ambulance and air medical transportation, multiple casualty incidents, gaining access to and extricating patients,
hazardous materials incidents and responding to situations involving weapons of mass destruction.
Instructional Materials, Instruction and Laboratory Skill Labs
1. The AEMT instructional materials will entail various media formats both printed and virtual, i.e., textbooks, workbooks, handouts, study apps, review manuals, videos, etc. The textbook selected for this course is the Advanced Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, Third Edition. 2. Instruction will be delivered live and/or virtual, via ZOOM and Google Classroom.
3. Teaching-learning methods in this course may include, but are not limited to, assigned readings, essays, presentations, discussion boards, chat sessions, critical thinking exercises, labs, and class activities. Evaluation procedures include quizzes, written examinations, and assignments. Major exam dates and times are subject to change. Supplemental information to assist in your learning will be posted. You will need to devote roughly 8-10 hours per week assignments, plus online class sessions and skills days.
4. Laboratory Skill Labs will be conducted live at the CLTCC Ferriday Campus a minimum of one (1) Saturday a month. Attendance is required at all Skills Lab trainings.

Please know that enrollment into the AEMT course is a four-step process. This process includes completion and submission of the ACE4EMS AEMT course application, registering with CLTCC Ferriday campus, creating an account in Google classroom, and applying for a student license with the Bureau of EMS). Once the applicant completes all steps and meets the minimum requirements, they are considered accepted and enrolled in the program.
The application deadline is two weeks prior to the start of the course, July 10, 2021. A minimum of 12 and a maximum of 24 students will be accepted on a first come-first serve basis. Applications and/or instructions will be emailed to student after registration.

Course Attendance Policy
Student attendance is expected at ALL scheduled live sessions and skills days. No makeups will be allowed. Students will be dropped from the course for excessive absenteeism if attendance falls below 90% of scheduled course hours (20 hours). Excused absences may be granted for medical emergencies or death in the immediate family. Excused absences may be granted by the course instructor for extenuating circumstances.

Testing and Certification
Upon successful completion of the course, students will take the NREMT AEMT practical skills examination, which is recognized by the LDH, BEMS. Upon successful completion of NREMT AEMT CAT examination the student will receive a NREMT certification and will be eligible to apply for licensure as an AEMT through the State of Louisiana.
